Fireplace Project

August7

It is my dream to drywall in front of our existing living room fireplace wall, recess a flatscreen and install a sleek, modern fireplace. Maybe someday. But for now, I wanted to update our wood burning fireplace and make it more usable for us. We never burn a fire – too messy, smelly, and too much work. Instead, I burn candles in the fireplace. I wanted to use some left over tile we had to create a new envelope for the firebox. Now our fireplace is clean and easy!

Dining Room Renovation

August3

I am so happy and so proud to post that our dining room renovation is complete. It has been a work-in-progress really from the day we moved in. It was painted but left essentially empty for a long time. I had been painstakingly searching for a dining room table & chairs for about the last year or so and I finally found the set I wanted last Thanksgiving. We bought the table then and then bought all of the chairs with the money/gift cards from our wedding in March. Since the arrival of the furniture, I ordered a custom rug through Masland, created the wine display panels, installed the pendant fixture, and bought all new accessory items.

I’m not sure what my favorite part is. I love the table – it is absolutely gorgeous, and the chairs are so comfortable – truly worth waiting for. The rug is even more beautiful than I thought it was going to be, but the wine display panels are my own personal creation which may take the cake. Overall, everything turned out very nice and I love this room!!! I can’t wait to entertain all of our family and friends here now.

The Broadmoor Cottages

June12

The new Broadmoor Cottages are up and running! We have been working on this project for the last year, and they are stunning. This was a new construction project at the Broadmoor located off the 18th Hole of the golf course. There are 6 buildings, 5 of them contain 8 bedrooms suites and 3 parlor areas, 1 building has 4 bedroom suites and 2 parlors. The buildings are designed so that each party has a multitude of options in how they break up the space to accommodate the appropriate number of guests. The decor fits in with the property’s historic feel, but is much more casual and fresh feeling. They are perfect for any type of large group like a wedding or corporate event but also work for a romantic getaway for two.

New Bed Set

June11

So we’ve been looking for a new duvet cover for our bed for a while now. Right now our room is so dark – I really wanted something springy and bright for a change. I just came across this set from West Elm that was on sale and I scooped it up. Will be looking for new window treatments and maybe some new accessories to complete the new look. Before and after pictures soon to come!

Top “Green” Hotels

June10

Trip Advisor recently named its top 10 eco-friendly hotels in the world. I wanted to re-post with some pictures and links included. (Blurbs are copied directly from their post). I think it is so great that all of these hotels actually emphasize and advertise their “green” aspects in their marketing. It really shows that Eco Lodging is making a significant imprint in the Hospitality market and that vacationers are actually interested in eco aspects of the hotels they choose to stay in. Needless to say, I want to go to all of them!!!

1. Hamanasi Adventure and Dive Resort, Hopkins, Belize – Set on 21 acres of coastal forest, this eco-resort’s green practices ensure that nothing goes to waste, from composting all vegetable and fruit scraps to using old linens as cleaning rags. In addition, the resort’s dive adventures educate guests to minimize the negative impact of human contact with the environment. According to one TripAdvisor traveler, “The fact that the resort advocated reusing towels, limiting sheet changing and using the surrounding natural beauty made us feel that we were contributing to the preservation of Belize.”

2. Hotel Terra Jackson Hole, Teton Village, Wyoming – Eco-friendly elements abound in the Hotel Terra, literally from floor (environmentally-friendly carpets) to ceiling (recycled roof shingles). Organic linens, low-flow toilets and solar-powered faucets can also be found in guest rooms, and even relaxation is green here, with organic spa products, and 100 percent natural mattresses made from recycled and organic materials. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, “We were ushered to our suite and discovered that not only was it the latest in eco-friendly hotels, but incredibly luxurious!”

3. La Cusinga Eco Lodge, Uvita, Costa Rica – While stunning views of the Pacific are reason enough to visit La Cusinga Eco Lodge, its eco-friendly programs and commitment to conservation make it all the more appealing. Set in the rainforest, the eco-lodge’s electricity is generated by solar and hydropower, and the water is heated by the Costa Rican sun. Buildings are constructed from re-forested wood and local materials, and rely on natural air currents to cool them. As one TripAdvisor traveler commented, “The organic gardens were my personal favorite, and they use all the fruits and vegetables in their daily meals.”

4. Morgan’s Rock Hacienda & Ecolodge, San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua - It’s all about trees at Morgan’s Rock, which has planted one and a half million trees for farming to help reduce forest destruction, and added nearly 100,000 permanent new trees to the property to provide a home for wildlife. When the lodge was constructed, extra wood was used to build furniture in the rooms, and trees on the property are allowed to grow naturally, with some even growing through the cabin roofs. One TripAdvisor traveler says, “It’s a totally unique experience, and it hits all of the right notes for friendliness, service, and comfort, with a conservation and community development focus.”

5. The Ambrose Hotel, Santa Monica, California – The first hotel in the U.S. to receive the United States Green Building Council’s LEED Silver Certification, the Ambrose Hotel has put green practices in place all over the property, including composting, cleaning guest rooms with eco-friendly products, and recycling. According to one TripAdvisor traveler, “They are committed to protecting our environment and preserving our precious natural resources.”

6. Hix Island House, Isla de Vieques, Puerto Rico – Guests can get close to nature here, while also helping to sustain it. Solar panels contribute to heat the water on the property, and the shower water also helps water the fruit trees, and other plants on the site. Nestled on a natural refuge among native plants and animal species, the hotel is committed to tranquility, and does not allow disruptive items like phones or televisions. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, “You can sit for hours, admiring the natural beauty of the property. Lizards, birds, and other creatures will entertain you.”

7. Alaska’s Sadie Cove Wilderness Lodge, Homer, Alaska – Only accessible by boat, floatplane, or helicopter, this eco-lodge built from local and reused materials lets guests get up close and personal with the Alaskan wilderness. Water to the lodge comes from a mountain stream, and among a host of other eco-friendly programs such as recycling and energy-efficient lighting, the lodge offsets carbon emissions by planting a tree for each guest. Said one TripAdvisor traveler, “It is truly obvious that this lodge is keenly aware of the importance nature plays in our world. They practice eco-friendly living! Carefully selected leftover foods were fed to the wildlife each day at the lodge…it was breathtaking!”

8. Finca Rosa Blanca Coffee Plantation and Inn, Santa Barbara, Costa Rica – A pioneer in sustainable living in Costa Rica, Finca Rosa Blanca employs energy conservation practices and recycles extensively, but also focuses on raising guest awareness about the local environment. The Inn’s 30-acre coffee plantation is certified sustainable, and offers guests the chance to learn about growing and processing organic coffee. According to one TripAdvisor traveler, “Add their environmentally-conscious recycling, and using their organic gardens to supply the restaurant, and you have an incredible hotel experience.”

9. Concordia Eco-Tents, Virgin Islands National Park, St. John – Built from environmentally-friendly materials, these eco-tents employ solar power to heat water and run appliances, and recycle extensively. Guests can feel close to the natural wildlife while still enjoying comforts like hot showers and kitchens, not to mention sweeping Caribbean views. Elevated walkways help preserve the property, and odorless composting toilets save water. According to one TripAdvisor traveler, “The composting toilet, solar shower and refrigerator made life easy, a gentleman’s version of camping…and the footprint of all of these buildings has almost no effect on plant and animal life here.”

10. Hotel Monaco Seattle – a Kimpton Hotel, Seattle – The Hotel Monaco brings green options to an urban setting with a variety of eco-friendly programs, such as donating unused toiletry bottles to local charities rather than throwing them away, and using recycled paper across the property. Guests’ rooms are equipped with recycling bins, low-flow toilets, faucets and showers, and organic coffee and snacks. Plus, travelers can feel closer to nature with a pet goldfish available for free from the hotel for the duration of their stay. As one TripAdvisor traveler said, “I liked the Monaco because of the ambiance, the ‘green’ feel, and of course, Belle [the goldfish]!”

Building Supplies

June10

My friend told me about this website that is basically like a Craig’s List dedicated to home building & construction supplies. I haven’t used it to procure anything yet, but it is a source worth keeping in the back pocket. Check it out here.

King West Kitchen

July19

This is King West Kitchen (KiWe) in Toronto, Canada designed by Roundabout Studio Inc. I came across this while checking out Barzelle, a custom millwork, furniture, & cabinetry that fabricated all solid surfaces, booths, cabinetry, dining tables and outdoor patio furniture for the project. What I really love though is the application of the laser cut metal ceiling grid lit from above. The additional design element of the shadows created by this application are very playful and unexpected in the space. I also like the subtle tie in of the pattern in the booth upholstery.

Love it.

New Dubai Creek 6th Bridge

July19

Check out the new bridge due to start construction next month in Dubai. It will be the "largest and tallest arch bridge in the world, at one mile long and 670 feet tall." Designed by Fxfowle out of New York, the bridge is scheduled to be finished in 2012 and cost $817 million. Nuts.
